BEFORE YOU START:
The following instructions are designed to help you meet safety regulations laid down under current Building Regulations.
The most important rules about safety state that the height of the handrail on the stairs and landing should not be less than 1000mm, and that a 100mm ball should not be able to pass between spindles/balusters at any point.
| EXTERNAL NEWEL MEASUREMENTS | 82mm Newel | 65mm Newel |
| Length of Post from Floor to top of Post | 1,260 | 960 |
| Length of side fixing post from floor to top of post | 1360 | 1160 |
| Depth of cut for side-mounting joint lip cut out | 8.5 | 0 |
| Depth of shade bit (35mm) | 50 | 40 |
TOOLS REQUIRED:
You will already have most of the tools needed to fit new TWA Banisters.
The following are the most useful:
- Measuring and Leveling - Tape Measure, Hand Level, Framing Square.
- Cutting - Miter Box, Saw (hand or power).
- Nailing - Hammer, 50mm Oval Nails.
- Glue - Epidermise 372 (epoxy) and wood glue.
- Screw Driving - Screwdriver, manual or power (Star).
- 50, 40, 15mm screws. 100, 120mm coach screws.
- Drilling - Hand drill,18mm and 6mm Masonary bit.
- 1mm Timber bit.
- Sanding - Sandpaper, steel wool, wood file, Wood chisel and paint.
NEWELS, BALUSTERS/SPINDLES and FILLETS - calculating how many you need:
- Newels: ± 1 to 1.5m apart.
- Balusters 32 X 32mm: Distance from post to post divided by 140 - (eg: 1200mm/150 = 8 balusters. )
- Balusters 42 X 42mm: Distance from post to post divided by 150
(Alternatively fill in and fax/e-mail TWA Banisters the documents found at our help desk for our FREE planning service and we will work this out for you.)
1. POSITIONING OF NEWELS AND ASSEMBLING |
TO CONCRETE SLAB:
- a. Drill 18mm hole into slab. (posts not to be greater than 1.5m apart).
- b. Determine height of newel post. (Top of Hand rail to be 1m from slab). Newel’s to be 1040mm. Under Newels to be 960mm.
- c. Glue and screw Newel pin into post, then glue post into slab.
- d. Before glue is dry, align Newels by attaching fillet to top of Newels with 25mm screws and “L” bracket with 15mm screws.
TO TIMBER DECK:
- a. Determine height of post from deck level (as per concrete slab).
- Add 200mm for bracing onto side of deck.
- 96 X 96 Newels to have a lip of 66mm
- 65 X 65 Newels to have a lip of 50mm
- Affix “L” bracket same as concrete slab.
- b. Drill two holes using your 35mm spade bit
Then with your 10mm bit drill into the centre of the 35mm spade hole, all the way through. Place Newel post into position & fasten with the 30mm washer and 75mm Load Screw (Newel Fixing kit). Glue & cut dowel into place, smooth with sand paper.
- c. Attach fillet. (as per concrete slab).

- a. Measure and cut base rail to fit between posts. Mark off position of banister on under side of base rail and screw “L” bracket to under side of base rail.
- b. To mark off banister position on fillet, use base rail as template. Figure Q.
- c. Screw Baluster to base rail with 50mm screws, position base rail and banister in line with posts and fasten base rail “L” brackets to post. Using 25mm screw and 50mm nails, fasten fillet to top of banister.
